Does anybody know where I can get Valvoline VR-1 oil here in Ontario without paying through the roof for it? I know Napa's house brand oil is a valvoline blend, but not the VR-1 stuff. Was going to call Napa tommorow to see if they can get the part number

Anybody prefer something other than VR-1? Im going synthetic because i have a roller cam. Was thinking if not VR-1 then Penzoil platinum as apparently it has tested out to be better than Mobil 1 and goes on sale at Wal Mart quite often

opinions? info?

thanks
Matthew

I use shell rotella 15 40 in the buick turbo engine. Been using the synthetic blend of that in the 1 impala.
The other impala got its first oil change on the weekend and I used the canadian tire synthetic. Been told its just as good as any other synthetic out there.

Im going to go with some Pennzoil Platinum synthetic. Cousin of mine drive a modded C6 vette hard with a vette group of guys, one of them does testing for bobistheoilguy.com and apparently pennzoil platinum is at the top, even better than mobil 1...not a fan of amsoil or lucas...and every once in a while the pennzoil goes on sale at wal mart for 26 bucks for the 5 quart container, so im down! lol

Speaking of roller cams and oil...I'm going to break in the engine on dinosaur oil as I heard its better for seating the rings. Any debates on that?
 Then switch to a synthetic

I have heard that as well, but to be honest, I have not heard enough people say that to know if its true or not

In all honesty, you could probably have the stuff shipped in by the crates for a little less {overall} than what you can get for in Canada
Brad Penn is good stuff to, and will ship anywhere for the same flat rate in most cases

That might be worth looking into. Our dollar is just above par right now too. Just make sure there are no environmental taxes at the border and try to use USPS.

Modern rings, especially plasma moly rings, seat within minutes, if the engine is bored and the bore is true (no taper).
Roller cams are billet and require no break-in.,. only flat tappet cams require break-in (1/2 hour, RPM's 2000 to 2500) with high shear cam lube (moly) on lobes and lifter face.,. "weak" valve springs are recommended, until cam and lifters mate.
Refined oil has elements of various sizes, synthetics are all of uniform size.,. flat tappet cams require break-in oil and should have a high phosphorous and zink content, until cam/lifter compatibility is established.

Yep,
morning Pman, we just went through a cam wipe-out situation on another forum, because of wrong cam break-in and wrong oil combo.
The thread is called WHY WHY WHY on CHP

My car is a flat tappet and I run Schaeffer's racing oil. Its pricey but it has the zinc thats required and is resistant to alcohol based fuels ( I spray alky at the throttle body to run more boost and timing)

Roller cams, or for that matter, engines with roller assemblies, don't require cam/lifter break in and conventional oils will do.
Flat tappet combos are quite another story and "DO" require break-in and ZDDP.
